Michal Vittels - Artist Statement
For over five decades I paint figures. I consider these figures and not portraits, because they are not a specific person and I do not intend or refer to anyone in particular, although they are, at least in recent years, ”as-realistic"."
The manner of painting – style, composition, colors - all these have changed over the years. What has not changed is the subject – the Figure.
Alone in a frontal pose with an attentive expression, or just watching in or out, usually on a neutral background that doesn't suggest any particular place.
During the first decade - the decade of learning - I painted a living model with the feeling that I had to study the subject. I never considered these works really my own, and I never exhibited them.
During the second decade I abandoned the model and experienced an outbreak reflected in large formats, very colorful works with industrial paints on plywood. During the third decade I returned to oil on canvas, with an almost abstract style in which the figure blends with the background.
Now, for several years, I paint as-realistic figures based on drawings or photographs that are used as a skeleton for the painting.
The figure is standing, sitting, or lying on a dividing background reminiscent of a room or a skyline. I paint from a strong and continuing need to illuminate an internal figure and to approach closer and closer some obscure inner truth.
Only in retrospect can I try to understand the stages of exploration, which will continue as long as I paint.

מזה כ-5 עשורים אני מציירת דמויות. דמויות, ולא דיוקנאות, מכיוון שאין אלה ציורים לפי
מודל כלשהו ואני לא מכוונת למישהו מסוים, למרות היותן, לפחות בשנים האחרונות, "כמו-
ריאליסטיות".
אופן הציור- הסגנון, הקומפוזיציה, הצבעוניות - כל אלה עברו שינויים רבים במשך השנים. מה שלא השתנה הוא הנושא - הדמות.
בודדת, פרונטלית, בד"כ על רקע נייטרלי שלא מרמז על מקום מסוים. ההבעה קשובה או מתבוננת, פנימה או החוצה.
בעשור הראשון - עשור הלמודים - ציירתי מודל מתוך הרגשה שעלי ללמוד את הנושא.
עבודות אלה לא נחשבו על ידי כ"שלי" במלוא מובן המילה ולא הצגתי אותן אף פעם.
בעשור השני נטשתי את המודל וחוויתי התפרצות שהתבטאה בפורמטים גדולים מאד, צבעים תעשייתיים על דיקטים וציור אקפרסיבי וצבעוני מאד.
בעשור השלישי חזרתי לשמן על בד, בסגנון כמעט מופשט של משטחי צבע שהדמות מתמזגת בהם.
כעת, מזה שנים מספר, אני מציירת דמויות "כמו-ריאליסטיות", מבוססות על רישום או צילום המשמשים כשלד לציור.
הדמות ניצבת, יושבת או שכובה על רקע מחולק המזכיר חלל חדר או קו אופק.
אני מציירת מתוך צורך חזק שאינו מתכלה להעלות על הבד איזו דמות פנימית ולהתקרב יותר ויותר לאיזו אמת פנימית עלומה.
רק במבט לאחור אני יכולה לנסות ולהבין את שלבי החיפוש, שימשך כנראה כל עוד אני מציירת.
